Conversion Reliability Update — Better glTF, 3MF, KMZ, 3DM & More

A major reliability update improves real-world glTF, GLB, 3MF, KMZ, 3DM, XYZ, Draco, USDZ, STEP, and DXF conversion workflows.

We've shipped a broad reliability update based on real conversion failures. The existing 3D converter now handles more real-world files, explains unsupported inputs more clearly, and adds preflight limits for several high-risk conversions.

More Files Convert Correctly

  • glTF and GLB — Self-contained JSON glTF files now load correctly, and models with multiple buffers are normalized before GLB export. If a glTF references separate .bin or image files that were not provided, the converter now explains exactly what is missing instead of showing a generic binary parsing error.
  • 3MF — More valid 3MF files now import reliably, including files with larger model documents. Expanded archives still have safety limits to protect the browser.
  • KMZ — KMZ archives containing Collada 3D models can now be imported correctly. Geographic KMZ files containing only KML map data are identified clearly rather than failing with an unrelated browser error.
  • Rhinoceros 3DM — Cached render meshes attached to BREP objects are now imported, improving results for older Rhino models.
  • XYZ point clouds — Coordinates separated by spaces, commas, or semicolons are accepted. Empty or invalid geometry is no longer reported as a successful conversion.
  • Draco-compressed GLB — Draco decoding and conversion are more reliable, including exports to formats that require an uncompressed intermediate model.
  • Textured USDZ — Textured USDZ files now load more reliably, with a browser-safe size limit and safeguards that prevent an older attempt from interfering with a newer conversion.

Clearer, Safer Failure Handling

  • Missing textures — For several mesh formats, usable geometry can be preserved when external textures are unavailable. The result includes a warning that textures were removed.
  • ET PRJ files — EasyToy .prj files are now recognized and directed to the official conversion workflow instead of entering an incompatible generic importer.
  • Non-3D AMF files — Audio tracker modules that also use the .amf extension are detected before conversion and are no longer mistaken for Additive Manufacturing Format models.
  • Large STEP and DXF exports — The converter estimates text output complexity before building very large files, returning a clear safety-limit message instead of exhausting browser memory.
  • More useful errors — Specific failure reasons are now preserved throughout the conversion, making the message shown after a failure more useful.

Known Boundaries

This update improves reliability without pretending every file variant is interchangeable:

  • The current converter requires external buffers and images to be embedded in the glTF, or the model must first be converted to a self-contained GLB.
  • A KMZ containing only geographic annotations does not contain a convertible 3D Collada model.
  • A curve-only 3DM file without render meshes still needs a dedicated curve conversion workflow.
  • Very large expanded archives and extremely complex text exports continue to be rejected to keep browser-based conversion safe.
